Squash Rules
The aim of the game
Hit the ball against the front wall in such a way that your opponent cannot return it according to the rules.
The rally
- You take turns hitting the ball against the front wall.
- The ball must hit the front wall between the tin (lower bar) and the upper boundary line.
- The ball may also hit the side and rear walls, as long as it then hits the front wall according to the rules.
- The ball may bounce on the floor no more than once before you return it.
- You may also volley (hit the ball before it hits the ground).
- A rally ends when:
- The ball goes out or is hit incorrectly.
- The ball bounces twice.
- A LET or stroke is awarded.
LET – Replay the rally
- LET means that the rally does not count as a point and is replayed.
- It is given in case of doubt, obstruction or if it would be unsafe to hit the ball.
- For example, if you accidentally obstruct your opponent's shot.
STROKE – Point for opponent
- A stroke is a point for your opponent if you clearly obstruct or get in the way of a good shot.
- This also applies if you are standing too close to your opponent and they cannot hit the ball safely.
- Stroke = loss of point for you.
Scoring
- Each rally earns a point (rally point scoring).
- The game is played to 11 points.
- At 10-10, a player must win by a margin of 2 points.
- Matches are usually best of 5 games.
Safety
- Are you unsure whether you can hit your opponent? Then play a LET.
- Eye protection is strongly recommended.
- Fair play and respect for each other are essential.
